Sažetak
Health-related quality of life is used as a generic designation to characterize a range of different physical and psychosocial variablese. Chronic hepatitis C has a profound negative impact on both physical and mental well being, hence decreasing health-related quality of life (HRQL. Depression, fatigue and neurocognitive deficits are the reason of the most common complaints. Three scales are used for measuring health-related quality of life among patients infected with HCV: The Short form 36 (SF-36 a generic instrument used to assess HRQL which is widely used, Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F) questionnaire and Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire–Hepatitis C Virus (CLDQ-HCV) instrument. Studies on the use of interferon alone or in combination with ribavirin have shown that patients suffered a significant drop in HRQL scores before and continued to fall during the treatment. The side effects of interferon were responsible for most of the negative effect on health-related quality of life during the treatment. Improvement in quality of life outcomes are more noticeable in patients who achieve SVR with direct acting antivirals (DAAs). In consideriation of low efficacy and significant toxicity of IFN/RBV regimens, treatment options are moving towards new DAAs which offer improved SVR rates with less toxicity, leading to advancement in HRQL in patients with chronic hepatitis C.
