Sažetak
Recently, some Croatian prepositions that take the dative have also begun to take the genitive, with the meaning remaining roughly the same, e.g. nasuprot crkviDAT vs. nasuprot crkveGEN ‘opposite the church’. On the basis of corpus data, it is claimed that this variation (with nadomak ‘close to’, nadohvat ‘within reach’, nasuprot ‘opposite’, usuprot ‘in opposition to’, unatoč ‘despite’, usprkos/uprkos ‘despite’, and naprama/naprema ‘to’) is a result of a number of local pressures towards dative or genitive use. Specifically, concessive uses of prepositions correlate with the dative, whereas locative uses correlate with the genitive. Other pressures towards the genitive include: the confluence of the loss of number inflections with the genitive in the ratio meanings of naprema/naprama, and the fact that the morphological complexity of some of the prepositions is transparent to speakers, which facilitates a reanalysis with a genitive construction (na + dohvat + nounGEN). Overall, these local factors are part of the more general trend of the dative becoming a prepositionless case in Croatian and throughout Slavic.
