Sažetak
Introduction: Postgraduate Doctoral Study of Biomedicine and Health represents the highest level of education at the Faculty of Medicine Osijek. Effective mentoring is a critical determinant of success in the world of academic medicine. Despite a growing body of research there is a lack of clarity about the characteristics and outcomes of mentorship. Furthermore, there are different tools available to measure the effectiveness of the mentorship in the health care. The aim of this study was to assess the quality and students' satisfaction with their mentors at the PhD program of Biomedicine and Health at the Faculty of Medicine Osijek (Croatia). Matherials and methods: A total of 36 PhD students at the Faculty of Medicine Osijek filled an anonymous online Mentorship Evaluation Questionnaire covering 7 behavioral characteristics of their mentors. Students were asked to indicate their level of agreement with each statement along the Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Neither Agree nor Disagree, 4 = Agree, 5 = Strongly Agree). Results: The majority of students strongly agreed (68.6 %) or agreed (20 %) with the claim that mentor is available, and shows interest and understanding. Most of them (75 %) confirmed that their mentor provides valuable information and ensures financial support for scientific research. Two-thirds of students reported that their mentor encourages them to improve in fulfilling their students' obligations. The vast majority of students (86.1 %) strongly agreed or agreed that behavior and attitude of their mentor is an example of professionalism. Conclusion: Results of our study showed that Phd students at the Faculty of Medicine Osijek are generally satisfied with their mentors and report that mentor is helpful to them across a number of important aspects of postgraduate and professional development.
