Sažetak
Creation of concepts is the basis of all scientific disciplines and it is accompanied by search for the most appropriate names, i.e. terms that would best suit to designate notions in question. The aim of this paper was to compare the terms used to designate rapidness – e.g. speed, velocity, quickness – in human movement science in three languages: English, Croatian and German. Firstly, the terms referring to the basic concepts of rapidness in the three selected languages were analysed. Secondly, the terms under consideration were used as nodes, i.e. node words, and research was conducted to identify their possible collocators. As for the English language, to realize this second research aim the titles of works indexed in the database Web of Science (All databases) were inspected to find possible collocators of node words addressing rapidness in human movement science. The same type of search was done by scrutinizing the titles in the collection of bibliographical data of works—papers, books, etc.—written in English by all researchers employed at the Faculty of Kinesiology University of Zagreb and published in various journals, proceedings, etc. within the period of 50 years (1959-2009) (Jaklinović-Fressl, 2009). As for the Croatian language, the works’ titles to be found in the aforementioned source were browsed with the same goal, i.e. all titles of works written in Croatian were analysed in terms of the co-occurrence of Croatian equivalents of the selected node words and their possible collocators. Multiple sources—e.g. databases such as Google Scholar, but also Web of Science—were explored to search for German equivalents of terms under consideration and their possible spans. The results yielded arrays of usage varieties thus pointing to differences among the three languages in terms of the subject matter of this paper.
