Pumps are manufactured of almost all known engineering materials, from polymers, metals (cast iron, nickel alloys, bronze &#8230 ; ) to ceramics and composite materials. The service conditions and the nature of pumped fluid determine the optimal material selection of a wide range of materials. The pump impeller is subjected to stresses due to impact of different forces, high velocities and pressures of fluid as well as erosion and corrosion, depending on the nature of pumped fluid and presence of abrasive particles. Very frequently we encounter the application of bronze made impellers, due to their corrosion resistance to seawater and impellers made of cast steel. The paper gives results obtained in laboratory testing of erosion resistance of different materials used for manufacture of impellers. Chrome cast steel (hardened and tempered) and three types of bronze castings (aluminium, nickel aluminium and lead tin bronzes) were tested by rotation of samples in water containing quartz sand in suspension. This test simulated rotation of impeller in pumped water with abrasive particles, which frequently occurs under real service conditions. Erosive wear was registered by method of mass loss after 24, 48 and 72 hours of testing. Investigation exhibited that bronze samples proved to be more erosion resistant than those of chrome cast steel.
