Sažetak
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the former Soviet republics became independent states with individual language policies, which, in a way, predetermined the status and the continuous development of the Russian language on the vast Soviet territory. The main goal of this paper was to describe and analyse the status of the Russian language in each of the fourteen former Soviet states, as observed by different authors and newly published language laws, constitutions and censuses. Data were gathered from multiple sources, including sociolinguistic textbooks and scientific articles, dealing with the status of Russian in post-Soviet states until 2012, as well as numerous law amendments, journals and online magazines, explaining its status in the period from 2012 to 2017. The method used in this thesis was the theoretical comparative research of the status of the Russian language in each of the fourteen ex-Soviet states separately, offering the most realistic picture of its actual usage today.
