Sažetak
In the context of the former Yugoslavia and Croatia, especially with regard to Serbian and Croatian collective memory, Jasenovac functions as a certain form of “past that does not pass”. Except being the central place of mass atrocities in the former Nazi-allied Independent State of Croatia (Croatian acronym is NDH), with number of deaths which ranks Jasenovac within first 7-8 ghettos and camps by the number of deaths in occupied Europe, Jasenovac ˝long-lasting and unresolved memory˝ continues through constant political manipulations with Jasenovac history, through Communist/Socialist period all until today. It is therefore worth to mention that the number of fatalities at Jasenovac camp complex stays the most controversial as well as still unresolved question of human losses for both Yugoslavia and Croatia in the Second World War, and as such, number of deaths in Jasenovac is still the most contested number in Croatian and Serbian historiography. This is primarily why Jasenovac does not represent solely specific geographic location in its WWII historical context, but serves as a contested lieu de memoire.
