Sažetak
One of the most difficult aims that every foreign language teacher encounters is teaching the learners how to communicate in the foreign language, because the term “communication” implies far more than just a means of communicating information. With the development of sociolinguistics in the second half of the 20th century, the importance of sociocultural milieu within which the interaction of the speakers takes place becomes a “new” and important factor in communication and the greatest importance is placed on the communicative, as opposed to the linguistic competence that had, till then, been considered the basis of communication. According to Dell Hymes, the author of the term, communicative competence implies the possession of grammatical competence, i.e. the knowledge of the linguistic system on various levels, but also sociolinguistic rules for applying the grammar-the ability to adequately use various linguistic varieties, depending on the communicative situation. Oral communication, therefore, unlike the speaking itself, implies interaction of the speaker and the listener, which means that we have to simultaneously develop speaking and listening, and therefore, the understanding of the oral expression is the basic prerequisite for the actualisation of the oral communication. According to communicative-technical terminology, the activity of the speaker and the listener in the communicative process is known as encoding ( speaker) and decoding ( listener). The basis of this paper is the development of the communicative competence within the class environment. In order to encourage the learners to speak, we place them in different communicative situations ( as minimal linguistic structures ) where each situation represents mutual relationship of at least two collocutors ( learner-teacher, learner-learner ). This relationship is established within the process of solving speaking and thinking tasks, where one collocutor is encouraged to participate in speech. Since the class environment does not usually stimulate speech process because it is artificially created communicative environment, the rules of which differ from the real-life communication, the teacher should create situations which will encourage the learners to express their opinions, feelings, agreements, disagreements, etc. Apart from the cited interaction, a significant importance belongs to the strategies that both teachers and learners use in the classroom communication, as well as to the teacher talk ( a simplified speech adjusted to the learners’ knowledge with the purpose of facilitating communication ).
