Sažetak
In this presentation we will analyse simultaneous interaction of languages of a multilingual with the help of DLC method. As DLC makes it possible to see the multilinguals' languages both as a single unit and a complex system consisting of different components (Aronin, 2016), it 1) enables us to take into consideration all of the constellation's languages simultaneously in order to understand how they function together in a particular context and 2) allows us to examine behaviour patterns and differences that emerge within the same DLC constitution and accross different configurations of the same DLC. One of the most prominent topics within the research into multilingualism is the interaction between language systems in a multilingual and its effects on language acquisition and use. However, the existing insights into the issue are still only fragmental if one does not take into consideration, both from the methodology and design perspectives, the complexity inherent in multilingual behaviour and influences from more than one language system at the time. In our paper, we will first provide a detailed description of a common DLC of multilingual participants from the same community in Croatia involving Croatian and Italian as official languages of the community and English as an International language. After that, we will present the results of our study, which looked into the interaction of languages in two groups of multilinguals with the same DLC, but with different configurations regarding the roles the languages assume within the DLC. The results are analysed in terms of similarities and differences found in the extent to which particular languages feature in a production task. The discussion will focus on the strength of claims that can be made from the data and the DLCs strong potential for further research into linguistic behaviour specific to multilinguals.
