Sažetak
The paper analyzes the development and marketing potential of cultural tourism as a potentially optimal model for sustainable development, regeneration and revitalization of regional, urban and rural destinations in a turbulent international context. European models of good cross-border sustainable tourism practices are being questioned, linking global trends and demand demands with authentic and unique components of tourism products, such as the European Capital of Culture project and the European Cultural Routes. In addition to defining the target market based on recent research and highlighting the need to create an innovative destination product based on the established preferences of tourist consumers, the multiplier effect of cultural tourism is emphasized in reducing seasonality, increasing consumption and employment as a possible solution to mitigate recession problems. The scientific contribution of the paper consists in analyzing the applicability of European models of good practices of cross-border sustainable tourism in the area of South East Europe, on the example of Istrian experiences in the development of authentic cultural-tourist products which affirm the unique characteristics of a particular destination, while promoting a common European identity, history and culture.
