Sažetak
Research has shown that discourse markers (DMs) are pervasive in spoken discourse. The use of DMs has been the focus of study in both L1 and L2 contexts. This study investigates the use of DMs in English and Croatian conversations of non-native speakers of English and native speakers of Croatian. The author analysed the use of DMs in the conversations of first year students of English language and literature at a Croatian university. The subject group consisted of four volunteers, two females and two males. For every participant four different speech events of about 15 minutes each were audiotaped. The speakers engaged in four casual, dyadic conversations, two in English and two in Croatian. The participants were asked to talk as naturally as possible about a casual topic of their choice. The analysis addressed the following questions: 1) What is the occurrence, frequency and functional distribution of DMs in English L2 and Croatian L1 conversations? ; 2) What is the relationship between the use of DMs in L2 and L1 conversations in the talk of each participant? A quantitative analysis of the gathered data was made to identify the occurrence, frequency and functional distribution of DMs in the corpus and in the talk of each student. A qualitative analysis of the data was made to define the functions of DMs. Statistical methods were used to identify the relationship between the use of DMs in L2 and L1 conversations in the entire corpus and in the talk of each student. Findings are discussed with respect to the factors that seem to influence the way in which non-native speakers use DMs in conversational settings.
