Sažetak
Ivan Kušan is a prolific Croatian author of children's novels, the most famous being Koko in Paris and You're Lying, Melita. The Terrible Cowboy is the first Kušan's collection of stories for the young created in the period between 1967 and 1981. The focus of this paper is the language and style analysis whose elements will be used to compare the original and the translation of this novel, with special emphasis on translation strategies and the analysis of translation of cultural specificities inbuilt into the novel. Additionally to Croatian, the novel was also published in Serbian language by the publisher Mladost, the Squirrel Library, which published the Croatian edition in the same year. Here we are talking about the beginning of eighties when Croats and Serbs lived together in one country, Yugoslavia, whose official language was Croatian-Serbian or Serbian-Croatian, while the goal of this paper is to analyse the translation from Croatian to Serbian language and identify the language and style characteristics of the used translation strategy, especially in translation of cultural specificities. Using NooJ, a computer tool for linguistic analysis, the texts will by compared, the number of individual words (tokens) and distinct words (types) will be identified, the most frequent words and collocations will be determined as well as the average number of words in a sentence in order to investigate if the language and style characteristics of the stories are in accordance with the cognitive abilities of children and young people for whom the stories are primarily intended. On the other hand, the translation strategies applied to cultural specificities - especially the names of streets, places, names of people, allegorical names, phrasemes, the specific names of food and the titles of films, names of actors and events mentioned in the novel by the author.
