Sažetak
This study investigates repetition in English and Croatian conversations of Croatian non- native speakers of English at the advanced level of language proficiency. It investigates the relationship between repetition in English and Croatian conversations in terms of the amount, types and functions of repetition. The findings show that proficient L2 speakers use repetition in L2 conversations to the same extent as they use it in L1 conversations. Further, the frequency of self- and other- repeats in L2 English conversations is similar to the frequency of these types of repetition in L1 Croatian conversations. As an interactional strategy self-repetition is more frequent in L1 than in L2 conversations whereas as a self-monitoring strategy repetition is more frequent in L2 than in L1 conversations. Other-repetition is most often used as an interactional strategy in both L2 and L1 conversations.
