Sažetak
The linguistic situation in Istria today is a result of the interlacing of idioms of two linguistic families, the Romance and the Slavic. Uneqivocally, this interpenetration brought to a high level of multilingualism (mostly bilingualism) for several centuries ago. The interrelations of the Istrian speeches had changed during the centuries: not so long ago the Istrian peninsula was dominated by the Istro-Venetian dialect, which was the Istrian lingua franca up to the 1950’s exodus. This function is now taken over by the Croatian colloquial language. In the light of the unceasing interfusion between different idioms in their collective evolution, we have to examine all the Istrian idioms and describe their linguistic environment in which they have developed and are still developing.
