Sažetak
This study investigates the determinants of sovereign spreads for a panel of all European Union countries except Estonia. Thereby a broader approach which combines typical economic determinants of sovereign spreads with political and institutional determinants which may also exhibit influence over spreads determination is adopted. Results suggest higher inflation is associated with higher sovereign spreads ; whereas lower fiscal deficit decreases the spread. The VIX index and Federal funds rate also matter for sovereign spreads determination. The influence of economic variables and several political variables of choice are shown (such as tendency to trust the government and the number of antigovernment protests) to depend on the features of the political system, namely bicameralism, executive legislative relations, type of the government, and cabinet composition.
