Sažetak
Neglect is the failure to care for a person in a manner which would avoid harm and pain, or the failure to react to a situation which may be harmful. Neglect may or may not be intentional. Abuse is the misuse of power, trust, control and/or authority. Older people in institutional settings are more vulnerable due to their dependency on professionals for care and the care environment. Risk factors for elder abuse include mental illness, disability, dependency on financial support, cognitive impairment, lack of family, etc. The purpose of the research is to determine whether there is an association between specific socio-demographic characteristics and health status of an older person and elder abuse and neglect in institutional settings. A survey was conducted of 245 residents living in nursing facilities in Varaždin and Međimurje County or cared for in General Hospital Varaždin extended care units in Novi Marof and Klenovnik. Taking of personal belongings of residents was more often noted by the respondents with higher education level. A positive correlation was found between most of diagnosed diseases and the frequency of abuse incidents involving unnecessary restraining of residents, screaming at residents in anger, taking their jewellery, money or clothes, touching residents in an inappropriate way and encouraging them to participate in inappropriate conversation. Negative correlations referred to mobility, i.e. significant correlation was found between reduced mobility and ignoring residents and withholding feeding assistance. Further research is needed into the quality of care of the most vulnerable groups of older people, i.e. individuals with intellectual disabilities, dementia, and impaired consciousness.
