Sažetak
Lead sarcophagi appeared in Syria around the middle of the 1st century AD. They were in use in Gaul since the second half of the 2nd century, but majority of them are dated in the 3rd or 4th century. In ancient Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, however, they are dated from the 5th/6th century and are relatively rare compared to the late Roman stone sarcophagi. The Archaeological Museum in Split owns only 13 lead sarcophagi found in Salona, mostly from the early Christian cemetery Manastirine. They are all made of lead plates whose edges are bent to form the side of the trapezium-shape chests. The most common decorative motifs are Christogram, various types of crosses, the letters alpha - omega and olive branches. According to anthropological analysis, they contain children's remains. Grave goods within are quite rare. For some of them we know the exact location of discovery. In this paper we will try to present the social status of deceased based on these and other important data.
