Sažetak
Karst areas, known for the high permeability of the rock mass, are very sensitive regarding groundwater pollution. Being one of the most important groundwater reservoirs, these were the first areas, where groundwater vulnerability mapping has been carried out. Soil cover is one of the factors displayed in the vulnerability maps. However, the knowledge about its protective effect is insufficient. Therefore, a comparative study of typical fine-grained soils covering areas of carbonate karst in two regions with quite different climate was started, in Slovak Republic and in Croatia. Interdisciplinary character is a special feature of this study. Soil-scientists (pedologists), mineralogists, geochemists and engineering-geologist and hydrogeologist take part. Soil structure and micro-morphology will be studied on thin and ultra-thin sections. Bulk mineralogy and clay mineralogy will be analysed using XRD. Chemical analyses include complete silicate analyses, exchangeable cations and CEC, carbonate content, pH, organic carbon and fractionation of humus compounds, total soil nitrogen, as well as sequential analysis of some heavy metals. Grain size and plasticity will be used for engineering-geological classification. Oedometer and triaxial pressure chamber will be used for permeability tests. Diffusion tests will provide migration and retention parameters of selected inorganic contaminants. First results will be presented at the conference.
