Sažetak
Autochthonous breeds are part of the local, regional and global genetic resources. Due to reduced competitiveness, some autochthonous breeds are endangered for which sustainability measures have been taken and are aimed at re- economic and social affirmation of the breed. Measures for support autochthonous breeds are mostly based on numeric indicators, but the need for a more comprehensive polyvalent approach is recognized by introducing a greater number of causal indicators. In Croatia, breeding of autochthonous breeds is driven by subsidies that are based on the type and endangerment status as result of numeric indicators. The aim of the paper is to analyze numerical indicators and usefulness other causal indicators. The research has confirmed that, along with numerical indicators, there are very important indicators of economic competitiveness, social and cultural significance. From explored autochthonous cattle breeds, Istrian cattle have the highest perspectives for sustainability and further population growth, mostly because of support of the local community. The autochthonous horse breeds show competitiveness through adaptability to less intensive breeding systems and the ability to use less-quality pastures. Murinsulaner horse is highly endangered due to lack of competitiveness and support systems of the local community. This indicator analysis points out weakness if only the numerical model is used and necessity to include other models and indicators to better understand breed status, trends, risks and opportunities. The interactive linking of models and indicators contributes to the more objective valuation and optimization of breeding strategies of autochthonous breeds.
