Sažetak
The landscape of the river Sava was constantly changing before the construction of the embankments in the 19th century. Although these transformations were quite forceful during the entire early modern period, the focus of the paper is on the 16th century. Spatially the paper is confined to north-western part of the Sava, around today’s capital Zagreb. In the confines of that particular place and time, river Sava was the juncture of massive migratory waves, violent incursions and social unrest. River Sava had significant influence on several feudal estates in the 16th century Croatian-Slavonian Kingdom, and it is directly linked to economical, demographical and other elements of historical development. What kind of proof can we find in historical sources? How did the river – as a direct consequence of environmental and fluvial changes – subsequently change the settlements around the river bed? How did these long term fluvial processes, and environmental changes, influence social, demographical and agrarian development in the Sava’s’ river valley? And, finally, what are the conclusions concerning interrelations of social groups and their environment? The research questions will not be answered merely through the analysis of historical sources. The history of landscape transformations and evidence of interrelations between social communities and the environment are also reflected in the toponymy of the area. This is why the author will, in addition to traditional methodology, present an interdisciplinary research model. The research conclusions were obtained through an in-depth analysis of the environment and social communities around river Sava. Several spatial units were highlighted: river crossings (which were important features of the river landscape and of high interest for commercial and military traffic). There are several borders that developed on the river Sava. Some of them are still functional ; others can be read only in historical, cultural or linguistic context. Several manors, castrums and medieval forts were built in order to oversee the river and road trade routes. The main medieval trading rout was centred in the contact zones, between the floodplains and the hills, where most of the settlements developed. Main goal of the paper is the presentation of detailed micro-level historical research. The research was grounded in abundant historical sources, and articulated through the use of a specifically developed methodology, and accompanied by sufficient theoretical arguments. In order to explain the sources, the author employed the use of different auxiliary sciences, such as geography, onomastics, demography and anthropology. Sources are rich with toponimical and anthroponymical data, reference to climatology and everyday life. In order to make use of full potential of these sources, a specifically mixed (quantitative and qualitative) approach was used.
