Sažetak
The Mafia is present in all spheres of society and its spread has become a sociological phenomenon which is occasionally portrayed through rather distorted spectacles of glamour and glorification rather than callous reality which ought to be closely related to it. By giving an insight into the historical development of the Mafia and the depiction of its functioning, the film case studies of The Godfather and Salvatore Giuliano are more easily accessible and the differences in the approaches taken by Coppola and Rosi much more comprehensible. Coppola’s mise-en-scène served to present a family chronicle and the business ventures of the successful Mafia enterprise while Rosi’s alteration of the narrative structure and the representation of rugged reality underlines the omnipresence of the Mafia which cannot be stopped. Moreover, its existence transcends the film’s borders and enters into the present day. Finally, through the realistic approach, the delusive images of the glamorous Mafia are dispersed and one is able to clearly see it for what it really is.
