Sažetak
There are many controversies regarding classic film noir, but as far as neo-noirs are concerned, they are even greater. Known to a wider audience as crime thrillers, neo-noirs can be characterized as films with an incredibly flexible style, which push the limits of classic noir and overflow into many other genres. Neo-noir encompasses different media and different cultures throughout the twentieth century, and transfers its popularity up to date. Neo-noir films are a realistic interpretation of the present human condition, and as they sprouted from noir, there are certain similarities, but also considerable differences. This final paper shows these differences primarily in terms of space. Neo-noirs use space to put the black core of our corrupted society under strong spotlight, and demonstrate how the big city is not the prestigious place for noir anymore, but spread its effect to completely different landscapes. This is mostly visible in representation of rural neo-noir films such as white neo-noir Fargo, which employs cold and snowy Minnesota backdrop to show moral decadence and alienation, and country noir No Country for Old Men, representing another extreme as the scene of the crime- warm and remote Texas surroundings. These neo-noirs, and others which use cityscape, show how a certain space can become a character, how it can be given meaning. It most commonly represents a place which forces people to struggle, mostly in brutal and immoral ways.
