Sažetak
Nowadays, the disposal of solid waste is a major problem in the world, included Croatia. There are different treatments like physical-chemical, thermal and biological. Based on physical and chemical characterization of waste, profitability and influence on ecology the appropriated treatment is selected. On the aspect of ecology the biological treatment is the best solution for treatment of biodegradable waste. Biodegradable solid waste included any organic matter in waste which can be broken down into carbon dioxide, water, methane and simple organic molecules by microorganisms [1]. Biodegradable waste can be decomposed by composting process and anaerobic digestion. Composting process is aerobic biological decomposition and stabilisation of organic substrates to an end-product suitable for a soil amendment or organic fertiliser and anaerobic digestion is a biological process that converts complex substrates into biogas and digestate by microbial action in the absence of oxygen through four main steps, namely hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis and methanogenesis (Figure 1) [1-3].
