Moira Kosti-Bobanovi University of Rijeka Faculty of Economics and Tourism Dr. Mijo Mirkovi , Preradovieva 1, 52100 Pula E-mail: HYPERLINK "mailto:moira.bobanovic@efpu.hr" moira.bobanovic@efpu.hr Abstract In this article we will discuss the students' opinion about English as a global language. The research was carried out among the students who have been attending the 3rd and the 4th year of our Faculty. The results are very interesting and useful. The students expressed their opinion about two main points: what makes one language a global language and is English going to be a global English. 1. INTRODUCTION As global communication expands throughout the world, so does the need for a global language; a language that is recognized and understood by people everywhere. In many parts of the world that language has been established, English. In most countries around the globe the English language can be found in some form or another, whether it be an international news broadcast such as CNN, or a Chicago Bulls tee shirt. What centuries of British colonialism and decades of Esperanto couldn't do, a few years of free trade, MTV, and the Internet has. English dominates international business, politics, and culture more than any other language in human history. For this world to be truly global, there must be some commonality or ease of communication. If trade and tourism around the world are going to operate and a global economy function and a global culture flourish, a widely shared, reasonably accessible language is requisite.(1) But what is a global language? According to David Crystal, a well-known professor at the University of Wales a language achieves a genuinely global status when it develops a special role that is recognized in every country. This might seem like stating the obvious, but it is not, for the notion of special role has many facets. Such a role will be most evident in countries where large numbers of the people speak the language as the mother tongue. But no language has ever been spoken by a mother-tongue majority in more than a few countries so mother-tongue use by itself cannot give a language global status. To achieve such a status, a language has to be taken up by other countries around the world. They must decide to give it a special place within their communities. There are two main ways in which this can be done. Firstly, a language can be made the official language of the country, to be used as a medium of communication in such domains as government, the law courts, the media, and the educational system. Secondly, a language can be made a priority in a countrys foreign-language teaching, even thought this language has no official status. English has inarguably achieved some sort of global status. Whenever we turn on the news to find out what's happening in East Asia, or Africa, or South America, or practically anyplace, local people are being interviewed and telling us about it in English. In April 2000. the journalist Ted Anthony, in one of two articles about global English that he wrote for the Associated Press, observed that when Pope John Paul II arrived in the Middle East to retrace Christs footsteps and addressed Christians, Muslim and Jews, the pontiff spoke not Latin, not Arabic, not Hebrew, not his native Polish. He spoke in English. Indeed, one may found a list of facts about the amazing reach of English language that may have begun to sound awfully familiar. English is the working language of the Asian trade group ASEAN. It is the de facto working language of the 98% of German research physicists and 83%of German research chemists. It is the official language of the European Central Bank, even though the bank is in Frankfurt and neither Britain nor any other predominantly English-spoken country is a member of the European Monetary Union. It is the language in which black parents in South Africa overwhelmingly whish their children to be educated. () 2. THE PROCESS OF RESEARCH The research was carried out on a sample of 88 students through the third and the fourth year of the Faculty. 83 % of the main group was covered whit it so that the obtained results are relevant for drawing a conclusion. The students attitudes were collected on basis of the questionnaire that contained a mix of question types. It was divided into three parts: A, B and C. In parts A and C, in open type questions, they were requested to answer the questions and express their personal opinions. In part A the students were requested to answer the following open type questions: What are disadvantages of global language? What are advantages of global language? What makes one language global language? In part C students expressed their opinions by answering the following question: Could anything prevent English language to become global? Part B is made out of four statements: English language is going to be the leading language in the following 50 years. English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of business, mass media and communication. English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of movies and music. English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of education and science. The students estimated them on the scale of Lickerts type. For chosen answers the following evaluations were predicted: 5 I fully agree 4 I agree 3 I hesitate to give an answer 2 I do not agree 1 I do not agree at all 3. THE RESULTS OF RESEARCH From this research we are going to find out the opinion of students who are attending the Faculty of Economics and Tourism about English as a global language. According to the results of the research the most common answers to the question: What are disadvantages of global language? are the following: a danger of losing and forgetting the culture of other languages, neglecting national language and culture, possibility of disappearing small languages and there are no disadvantages. Regarding to the advantages of global language the top four there are the following: possibility of easier communication in all parts of the world, simplicity in using and free flout of information and unique language that is used in all segments of life by great number of people. The most common answers to the question: What makes one language a global language? are: the language that is used by majority of population, the language that is considered in a way official and the language that is worldwide known. The results for the part B are the following: EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s Picture 1: English is going to be the leading language in the following 50 years. From the graph is seen that a great number of students fully agree (33) or agree (46) that English is going to be the leading language in the following 50 years. 8 students are not sure about their opinion and only 1 student does not agree with the above-mentioned statement. EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s Picture 2: English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of business, mass media and communication. According to the results 85 students from the sample of 88 students, fully agree or agree that English learning is going to be the leading language in the fields of business, mass media and communication. EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s Picture 3: English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of movies and music. 72 students agree or fully agree with the statement that English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of movies and music. What is very interesting, only one student among example of 88 students disagrees with the above mentioned statement. EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s Picture 4: English language is going to be the leading language in the fields of education and science. 31 students hesitate to give an answer to the question if English is going to be the leading language in education and science. There are few students (4) who disagree with the leading position of English language in above-mentioned fields but still a great number of students (41 fully agree and 12 agree) express their agreement. The most common answer to the question from the part C: Could anything prevent English language to become global? are: 79 students answered no, i.d. they believe that nothing could prevent English to become global language giving the following statements: - English is already a global language. - Because the knowledge of English is necessary in using Internet. - Because, English is the language used by great number of people. - There is a need for unique language, which is understood all around the world and that is English. The results can be shown graphically as follows: 7 students think that there are some possibilities that could prevent English to become a global language such as: - Implementation of a new unique language, - Economic crises, - Growing of national identity. Only 2 students hesitated to give an answer. EMBED Excel.Chart.8 \s CONCLUSION Regarding to the obtained results we may conclude that it is widely believed that English is truly the world language. English seems to be emerging, if it has not already arrived, as a global language. If this were to become official it would reduce the number of miss-translations. It would make communication a cross cultures much easier. As B. Wheaton mentions that English is the only language used in international air traffic control and is virtually the only language of a whole range of other activities from scientific research to pop music. English may not be the best choice, but it is the obvious choice, for an international language. ENGLISH - GLOBAL LANGUAGE? - STUDENTS VIEW - mr. sc.
