Sažetak
Sense of place is a concept used by many social disciplines: geography, psychology, sociology, anthropology. The term sense of place denotes the structure of attitudes and feelings, which individuals or communities have in relation to the area in which they live. The term was present in geography since the 1970's (Tuan, 1974), and it was utilised in many works (Eyles, 1985, Butz and Eyles, 1997, Feld and Basso, 1996, Shamai and Ilatov, 2005 Bilig, 2005 Brown and Raymond, 2007, Carter, Dyer and Sharma, 2007 De Wit, 2013, and others.). Agnew (1987) pointed out that sense of place was one of the three main dimensions of a place. Traditionally, geography associated this term with attachment, belonging and closed communities (Tuan, 1974, Relph, 1976). Today, however, the concept has been expanded – and is present now in research on dynamic, multicultural and changing environments within global cities (Massey, 1994). In this paper, the concept sense of place is used as a tool in the investigation of attitudes and feelings of residents in the Vrbik district in Zagreb, concerning their immediate location. The study is based on a questionnaire that was applied in the spring and summer of 2016 to a sample of 134 respondents. The paper consists of four parts. The first part analyses the degree of satisfaction of Vrbik residents vis-à-vis certain aspects of their neighborhood, seen as a centre of their aspirations and experience. By way of factor analysis a number of factors were extracted indicating level of satisfaction with the neighborhood and the most important factors were also recorded – those that have the greatest influence on general satisfaction in regard to life in the neighbourhood. The second part of the paper analyses the degree of importance of certain aspects of life in the neighborhood for its inhabitants, and based on this theme, a conclusion is made in regard to the relative role of different approaches to the urban environment – functional, aesthetic, social. In the third part, the main emphasis was on the feeling of connectedness and belonging. A special instrument used in the survey focused on the differentiation and evaluation of four sense of place types: indifference, rootedness, belonging to the community, belonging to the place. The fourth part of the paper deals with results brought by open questions from the survey. Textual representations of a particular place, by enhancing quantitative survey data, are able to clarify individual perceptions, attitudes and feelings, as well as inhabitants' view of symbolic and instrumental resources of the neighbourhood and thus provide a clearer image of the cultural construction of the environment.
