Sažetak
Strong K-fixation and oversupply of Ca and Mg are the main reasons for the K deficiency in maize on drained glaysols in eastern Croatia. Alkaline soil reaction, high contents of exchangeable Mg and Ca, as well as low content of K were found by soil test. Also, extremely low K/Mg ratios existed in soil and leaf tissue of corn. Besides adequate fertilization practice - increased potassium fertilization - the use of suitable varieties could either alleviate or overcome nutritional stress. Mean grain yield in the trial conducted on K- deficent soil (6.31 t/ha) was 38% lower than in the identical trial conducted at same period on normal soil (cambisol distanced 4 km by air- line: 10.25 t/ha). Considerable differences of corn yield were found among the hybrids from 3.61 to 9.59 t/ha. Four hybrids (OsSK568exp, OsSK602, OsSK444 and OsSK458exp.) could be designated as a more tolerant (mean yield 8.01 t/ha), four hybrids (OsSK552, OsSK554, OsSK508 and OsSK497exp.) less tolerant (mean yield 44.55 t/ha) to soil stress induced by K deficiency, while remaining two hybrids (OsSK382 and OsSK617exp.) are in mean range (6.45 t/ha). Stalk lodging incidences of individual hybrids were from 3.4% (OsSK444) to 65.9% (OsSK497exp.). Stalk lodging of two groups hybrids were as follows: 15.7% (the high yielding group) and 43% (the low yielding group), respectively. Ten corn hybrids were grown on two soil types. Differences of yields among the hybrids were from 4.09 to 9.15 t/ha. Five hybrids (the group B1: OsS552, OsSK558, OsSK554, OsSK497exp. and OsSK382) yielded under 6.0 t/ha, while remaining five hybrids (the group B2) had considerably higher yields (mean 7.41 t/ha). Acute K deficiency were found in the S1 experiment, while on S2 corn K status was more favorable. Grain yield differences among the hybrids on the S1 trial were from 3.61 to 9.59 t/ha. We presume that corn hybrids characterizing higher K and lower Mg uptake could be better choice for K-deficient soils.
