Sažetak
Although there is still no wide academic or public consensus in regard to the definition of the term terrorism, with more than 212 definitions used worldwide, majority of them agree that it involves a use of violence to create fear due to political, religious, or ideological reasons. According to GTD (Global Terrorism Database), in the period between 2005 and 2015, there have been 4.835 reported incidents related to terrorism in the region of Western and Eastern Europe combined, and the trend is showing to rise, particularly for the countries located in the eastern part of the Europe. This rising incidence of terrorist acts through the last decade have left a significant impact on the mental health of the population, not only in the countries that the incidents occurred in, but also the society in general. Unlike the immediate psychiatric distress following a terrorist incident, the effects of a constant fear and burden of potential future terrorism activities have not yet been studied sufficiently. Attempting to explore the ongoing mental distress caused by terrorism, Zimbardo and Kluger (2003) describe a term pre-traumatic stress syndrome, which is found to be developed from a constant anticipation of future terrorist activities. This phenomenon is considered to be preceded by a previous exposure to a deliberate act of terrorism, which made the individual feel vulnerable at the time. In addition, certain activities aimed at prevention of future attacks and intended to raise awareness, such as increased armed police or military presence, frequent public calls for increased vigilance and reports of suspicious individuals or behaviors can be considered a contributing factor for maintaining a higher level of fear and stress and thus having a negative impact on mental health of the individual ; which therefore makes a multidisciplinary, systematic and carefully constructed approach of maintaining a high-level of security and awareness while not contributing to deterioration of mental health a major necessity.
