Sažetak
Pharmaceutical wastewater is generally characterized by high organic load and toxicity. The activated sludge which is used for treatment of this type of wastewater has to be efficient in means of degrading specific substances and resistance to major and frequent changes in organic composition of wastewater. Cultivation of suitable microorganisms leads to development of highly specific and unique activated sludge which improves the removal efficiency of contaminants from wastewater. The aim of this study was to induce the production of well-adapted biomass that can be used in biological treatment of wastewater from pharmaceutical industry. The pharmaceutical wastewater was inoculated with isolated bacterial strains from pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plant, in order to start the development of specific activated sludge. The experiments were conducted in batch conditions, at different initial concentrations of biomass from 0.09 to 0.54 g dm-3 and initial concentration of organic matter in pharmaceutical wastewater 2.68 g dm-3 and 3.71 g dm-3, expressed as COD. During the experiments pH, COD, concentrations of dissolved oxygen and biomass were monitored. Microscopic analysis was performed in order to give a quick insight into microbial conditions of the system. Isolated bacterial strains were Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas putida, Comamonas testosteroni. The best quality of flocs and diversity in species in activated sludge was obtained in Exp.3, where the process efficiency of pharmaceutical wastewater treatment with acclimated activated sludge of 65.9 % was obtained 48 hours earlier than in Exp.2.
