Sažetak
The goal of this paper was to demonstrate the process of regional transformation in the historical/geographical region of Dalmatia since the mid-20th century and identify the main trends of contemporary regional development. The analysis focused on: demographic change, socio- economic change, and physiognomic change, in the course of two time periods: 1) the second half of the 20th century, and 2) new developments since 2001. The analysis was conducted through a comparison of four subregions in Dalmatia – Zadar, Šibenik, Split, and Dubrovnik, as well as the island, coastal, and hinterland strips of the region. The results of differing development processes are seen in the main regional differences in the region today. The role of urban centres in the area, demographic trends and age structure at the regional and local levels, problems of industrial production and weakening of the production base, an (over)orientation towards the service sector, especially tourism, changes in the structure and number of dwellings, with increases in second homes, inadequate territorial and administrative organisation remain some of the main challenges this area is facing in its development.
