Characteristics of the Adriatic Sea as a waterway are well known and scientifically well analyzed, but this is not the case with the shipping routes in the Adriatic. Ship’s crews have a large freedom in routes selection. As a result of this freedom in routes selection a common choice are routes very close to the shore or through the island areas especially on the approach to some Croatian ports. Shipping traffic requires better organization. Besides the measures such as traffic routings, there are others which can be implemented in a relatively simple and fast way. These measures are recommendations to ship’s crews and to other subjects concerned. Based on the present maritime traffic organization in the Adriatic Sea there is a need to define and recommend to ship’s crews the main shipping routes for ships of specific type and size in specific external conditions as well as the main facts which have to been taken into consideration during voyage planning and route selection. With the definition of these facts, and routes accordingly, the safety of maritime traffic can be significantly improved and voyage planning can be easier. One of the important elements that influence the selection of the sailing route is the ship breadth. This work should help crews in future shipping routes selection as well as shore countries in a better organization of maritime traffic. The obtained results should point out the main drawbacks of the existing system of duties and guidelines in short-sea navigation planning, suggest additional guidelines and, to a certain extent, standardize course plotting.
