Sažetak
The concept of "European identity" is nowadays often equated to "EU identity", even though "European identity" ought to be a cultural identity, belonging to European culture and civilization, while "EU identity" would be a civil identity connected with the European Union as a political organization. The Council of Europe and the European Union both seek to shape a multilingual and multicultural European identity that would not efface the national characteristics of member states, but would rather build upon them further and be just one more in a network of identities. European citizens construct their European identity through daily communication in which they express their multiple identities: local, regional, and national. In these concentric circles of identity the citizen as individual will be in the focus, the "prey" of these and possible other identities, but simultaneously free to choose any of them, or even a new one for each new social context. Through the idea of a "Europe of regions" and through strengthening transnational regionalism, a new sort of European identity has begun to take shape, one promoting language diversity on another level, since a common regional language thus reinforces its position and role in the (re)construction of European language identity. In spite of everything, European identity is most often perceived as a complex and layered construct, and not as a reality, which leads to a crisis in identifying it. On the one hand, the supremacy of national identity vis-à-vis European is still evident. On the other hand Eurocentrism, often based on stereotypes and prejudices, threatens to go in the undesired direction of xenophobia and chauvinism. Then it means that the European dream of "unity in diversity" could disappear.
