Sažetak
This paper will display a human factor research which aimed to detect or forecast work overload in air traffic control. Thanks to human-machine interaction countings and subjective complexity scores, it will be possible to follow the activity of the controller. Then, this activity could be studied to detect work overload. Actually, airspace capacities depend on the workload limit of controllers in charge of them, any improvement in this domain which would reduce this workload could increase airspace capacity and decrease costs and delays. As a large part of workload in air traffic control is due to complexity of the air traffic, subjective complexity scores will be used as a workload indicator, then it will be compared to three human-machine interactions in order to find a correlation. Finally, workload could be assessed by analyzing interaction frequencies. The main goal of this research is to find an automatic way to detect work overload or forecast it by assessing the workload. A specific simulator collected data from three different scenarios of en-route air traffic control performed by ten professional controllers. One of the three interactions correlates well with complexity and by proxy with workload. A method of work overload detection is tested but results are not relevant. However, another method using thresholds of activity is tested and results are satisfying.
