Sažetak
It is an indisputable fact that the frontier myth is one of the structuring elements of U.S. national mythology. Ever since the appearance of the mass distributed penny press, popular turn-of-the century Western road shows or the emergence of the Western as one of the seminal cinematic genres and the U.S. equivalent of the national epic, the Western has shown great resilience and flexibility while retaining some formal features nevertheless. As such it has undergone cyclical revisions and reevaluations that have apparently only restated its centrality for the myth of nation-building, even when refracted through an ironic, critical, or “postist” gaze. Since 2000 we have witnessed an interesting phenomenon of the surge of the Western in mainstream American cinema as testified by a flurry of recent films: True Grit (Joel and Ethan Coen, 2010) ; Django Unchained (Tarantino, 2012) ; The Homesman (T. Lee Jones, 2014) ; The Hateful Eight (Tarantino, 2015) ; and The Revenant (Iñárritu, 2015). In my presentation I will look into some of these examples and try to assess the range of artistic responses to the overarching western mythology ranging from a recuperative to a revisionist point of view.
