Sažetak
It is not only through reading of its obvious iconographical levels that show the confirmation and celebration of civic participation in the Battle of Lepanto (in which Zadar galley with its entire crew went missing in espionage action two months before the battle), but also its architectural structuring of the archaeological remains previously recognized, renewed and celebrated by the first generation of local humanists, that Mellia’s arch represented one of the crucial roots of the civic humanist identity, a concept already established by the first generation of local humanists through their contacts with Ciriaco of Ancona. Comparison with the Venetian Lepanto commemorative inscription on Arsenal Gates is a useful comparative example, from which Zadar monument comes out as an outstanding monument not only to Lepanto itself but also to a still vital concept of a local civic identity. Together with the contemporary endeavours to construct the new church of St Simeon, during the troubled moments of the town’s transformations from a rather powerful and vivacious mediaeval community into an administrative and military centre of Venetian Dalmatia, this project can be seen as the last expression of the communal pride and the confirmation of its longevity and endurance.
