Sažetak
With its strong opening to the tourist market and subsequent to becoming one of the 28 capital cities in the European Union, Zagreb has become a fast growing tourism destination according to the key indicators of tourism development. With its rich cultural heritage and attractive events, Zagreb has become a very interesting destination for tourists whose consumption habits and purchasing power provide the local real property owners and investors various opportunities to invest in tourist accommodation or other tourist facilities in the city. One of the key issues that Zagreb faces today is the change of the social image of the city center because of the evident migration of indigenous residents and the conversion of the housing stock into accommodation facilities for tourists. This process is known as tourism gentrification and entails a number of consequences that are, unfortunately, irreversible. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the present status of tourism development in the city of Zagreb as well as to anticipate the impact of tourism on the spatial and social transformation of the inner city of Zagreb.
