Sažetak
As a member of Croatian NGO Blaberon, whose main goal is to raise awareness about the importance of reading with special focus on connecting reading to critical thinking, I have organized and led many reading programs for various age groups. I was involved in the reading programs at the Faculty of Teacher Education at the University of Zagreb and at the School of Applied Arts and Design, and it was these two programs in particular that have got me thinking about young people and their often negative attitude towards reading. I saw firsthand that students regularly perceive reading as hard, boring and outdated. As a result, the majority of them have poor vocabulary skills and difficulties to express themselves. It was for these reasons that we at Blaberon established a reading program for kindergarten children. The program is both communicatively purposeful and meaning-oriented, promoting values important for democracy – tolerance, altruism and openness to critical and independent thinking. In the course of reading, special attention was dedicated to development of their pre-reading abilities – the children practiced how to spell, rhyme, memorize words and pronounce them correctly. The program proved to be very successful - most children involved in the program have expanded their vocabulary, improved their listening, spelling and talking skills, as well as the ability to concentrate. The presentation tackles my experience in organizing and leading reading programs, as well as my involvement in the development of the National Reading Strategy of the Croatian Ministry of Culture.
