Sažetak
Inert dusts, particularly those based upon amorphous silicon dioxide have been shown to possess some effectiveness against a variety of common storage insect pests. These materials can be classified into different groups depending on their composition. There is a significant effect of these dusts on grain quality, primarily bulk density and flowability reduction. We examined the effect of eleven inert dusts applied at 100, 200, 300 and 500 ppm on wheat bulk density reduction and their insecticidal activity against rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae (L.). Inert dusts in the experiment were diatomaceous earth (DE), zeolite, bentonite, kaolin clay, silica gels and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT).The group of synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide was the most effective against S. oryzae, followed by natural DE and the group of zeolite dusts. The least effective were kaolin clay and bentonite. The similar order of dusts was obtained in the reduction of wheat bulk density. The most effective dusts reduced bulk density significantly more than less effective ones. DOT generated low initial effectiveness (2 days) but after prolonged exposure time of 7 days, the effectiveness was 100%. Due to the effect on wheat bulk density, DOT belongs to the group with the least negative effect on bulk density and therefore, it is a very promising dust to control stored grain insect pests
