Sažetak
The protection of pit quarry from sea penetration is presented on the quarry “Sivac” at the exploitation field of Pučišća (island of Brač). Excavation of gray-white dolomite upper Cretaceous dimension stone - lime stone in the Sivac bed is partially developed as hillside and partially as pit quarry. The exploitable rock mass in the bed 30-35 m thick adjoins at the angle of 15º to 17º towards the sea. The working areas of this quarry are situated next to the sea and the exploitation of the pit part of the quarry reached the elevation of -29 m under sea level. During exploitation, the main problems were prevention of the sea to penetrate into the central cavity of the bed and drainage of technological and precipitation waters. A long tradition of dimension stone exploitation in Croatia has become enriched by the idea of the need of environmental protection and nature preservation. This is the reason why it would be desirable to cross from the surface quarry exploitation to the underground quarry, especially in the areas with beautiful scenery, important for development of tourism, such as the Sivac quarry. Since the stone deposits of the Sivac quarry reach under the sea bottom, there are some ideas to start underground exploitation reaching under the sea bottom (“submarine quarry”). The present issue is the precise definition of the discontinuity fabric of the pit quarry aimed at the protection of the quarry from the sea penetration through cavities of rock mass in time.
