Sažetak
Although the child has the right to live in their own family, in certain situations in the best interests of the child is to be entrusted to the care at the institution or another person or a foster family. Residential care for children involves placement of a child or young person in a specific institution, and includes accommodation in a home for children without adequate parental care or treatment home for children and youth with behavioural problems. If a child is in an institution, it becomes the primary residence of the child and in a way the replaces family environment. The presentation will include statistical data of institutional care for children in Croatia, but also will include models of work with children and young people, examples of good practice as well as the actual process of deinstitutionalization of children's institutions. In Croatia, there are 14 homes for children without parental care established by the Republic of Croatia, within which operates another 7 subsidiaries. Also, in Croatia are operating two non-state home for children without parental care (SOS Children's Village and the Caritas home in Brezovica). Treatment care for children and youth in Croatia consists of 11 homes for children and youth with behavioral disorders.
