On the whole theritory of the Republic of Croatia autohtonus Carniolan bee race (Apis mellifera Carnica, Pollm. 1879) is bred. In some races are known ecotypes are better adapted to specific climatic conditions. Any sistem of breeding and selection has to consider such genetic variability to ensure optimal results. In Croatia in relation to climatic and geographical variability are known three ecotypes of Carniolan Bee: Pannonian, subalpin and Mediterranean. Experimental queen breeding and control of traits started in 1994. and in 1997. National queenbreeding and selection program was accepted by Goverment, with main goals: increase of yielda, tolerance to diseases, with emphasis on varoatozis, gentleness and decrease of swarming tendency.
