Sažetak
The purpose of this paper is to discusss the various roles that service zones along the toll highways can play in the overall economic and, in particular, tourism development. First, various functions of the service zones as well as the French and Italian experience in planning these is presented. Second, a particular attention is paid to the current state of the service zones in Croatia and their importance for the Croatian tourism development. Finally, given that Croatia is currently accelerating her efforts in building modern toll-paying network of highways and motorways, a set of recommendations for developing adequate service zones in Croatia is outlined.
