Sažetak
Međimurje is one of the typical Kajkavian regions in the Republic of Croatia whereby Kajkavian is one of the three existing dialects in Croatia. Administratively the region of Medimurje itself is one of the most developed Croatian counties and is located in the northwest of Croatia and borders with Hungary, and after the breakup of the former Yugoslavia with Slovenia too. With both neighbouring countries, this region has now very good cooperation at all levels (cultural, linguistic and economic). Through history Medimurje had for several centuries state ties relations with the neighbouring Hungary, and then later it was together with Hungary in the Habsburg Monarchy, i.e. it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is this historical fact that is reflected today in the culture and language of the region. The authors have therefore studied multilingualism of the speakers (grammar school students) from this Kajkavian region. Considering that the population in today's modern time frequently uses new media, the authors explored what languages were used on the Internet in the Kajkavian speaking region of Medimurja and particularly on the most popular Facebook. Both vertical and horizontal multilingualism of Kajkavian speakers in Medimurje were studied. A questionnaire was used as an instrument for the study of vertical and horizontal multilingualism of Kajkavian speakers (Grade 4 students). It was followed by an analysis of language of the Facebook corpus itself in order to determine whether or not Kajkavian speakers expressed their multilingualism (horizontal and vertical) on Facebook too. The authors wanted to explore whether or not code-switching and code-mixing are present in their communication on Facebook, to what extent the code-switching and code- mixing are represented and what the reasons for code-switching and code-mixing are.
