Sažetak
Reviewing teaching methods and procedures applied throughout history, one can notice that the attitudes towards the use of mother tongue in foreign language classes have alternated from the complete reliance on the mother tongue to its complete exclusion. However, it is an indisputable fact that mother tongue is always present in foreign language teaching, which is why the comparison of the two language systems and their mutual influences cannot and should not be ignored. This paper provides an overview of the development of contrastive analysis and the application of contrastive approach in contemporary foreign language teaching, explains the concept and importance of interlanguage, and gives an overview of the research dealing with the effect of mother tongue on the foreign language. It also presents some possible applications of the contrastive approach in teaching word order in early English language learning.
