Sažetak
Poisoning is a condition in which a substance that if taken orally, transdermal, parenterally or inhaled, is injurious to physical health or can cause death. Even normally used substances (such as water) can be poisonous depending on the amount ingested. Acute poisoning constitutes a major health problem. It represents a major workload for pre-hospital care, the emergency services, intensive care and poison centers. It is mainly due to suicidal behavior, substance use disorders, or accidents. Suspecting and identifying cases of poisoning and accurately assessing poison's potential toxicity are critical to successful management because treatment is merely supportive unless a specific toxicological symptom or specific toxidrome, is diagnosed. Antidotes can be used to counteract the effects of poisons by stopping their action or by counteracting their physiological effects. The pattern of poisoning varies between areas and changes over time. New drugs appear, poisoning patterns for familiar substances change, there are local endemics and epidemics.
