Sažetak
The article examines the multiplicity of character representations in the novel and the "othering" of the colonized. Based on religious, gender, class and caste distinction it questions the concept of the dominant and the subordinate or the subaltern identity. Furthermore a question is posed on the term `postcolonial` as itself a domain that includes and excludes areas of research following the logic of the domination.
