Sažetak
The goal of this paper is to research social and historical context of the football match played on October 17, 1990 between the Croatian and the USA national teams in order to understand the relationship of sport and national identity in Croatian society in the early nineties. We are interested in researching specific event as an instrument of making aware belonging to the nation as "an imagined community" (Anderson, 1983), but also its political instrumentalisation as such. Although it was a friendly game, most of the public considered it to be of "historical" significance, but not so much for its "sport" importance, as much as a part of social and political events on the territory of the Socialist Republic of Croatia, i.e. the former Yugoslavia at that time. This match has a symbolic meaning in the modern history of Croatian sport as well as Croatian society, despite the fact that at the time of occurring, Croatia has not yet been politically sovereign state. Representatives of the political elite emphasized the importance of this event in public, such as some kind of "debut" of Croatia as a future independent state on the international socio-political scene. In this case one football match was "the loudest" media in society, sending a message of the upcoming social changes planned by the political elite and led by the Croatian Democratic Union, the party that had won the first multi-party elections a few months prior to this game. In order to analyse this case, different methods have been implemented – semi-structured interviews with persons involved (politicians and athletes), content analysis and discourse analysis of media issues and announcements as well as documents.
