Sažetak
National identity and nationalism are endless issues of social sciences and humanities reemerging in the late 1980s due to big social and political changes in Eastern and Central Europe. New nations-states, as Croatia, have tried to find their place on European as well as world social and political scene where successes in sport and achievements have played an important role. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Croatian Basketball Team has reached the finals against the United States team and won the silver medal. This success had sports and political significance for Croatia. The goal of this paper is to research the changing role and importance of high performance sport (in analysing the case of basketball) as both the symbol and the means of shaping and building national identity in the first years of independence of Croatia as nation-state. Anthony D. Smith’s distinction between civic and ethnic nationalism (1991) has been used as a theoretical frame. In order to analyse this case, different methods have been implemented – semi-structured interviews with involved persons, content analysis and discourse analysis of media related issues and announcements as well as offical documents.
