Sažetak
This paper explores the technology of 3D virtual worlds in relation to their possible benefits for education. The taxonomy of the 3D virtual world platforms (proprietary and open source) are presented and evaluated for the implementation of virtual learning platform of the V-ALERT project. Based on the recent literature, the platforms' characteristics are reviewed. Additionally, the main criteria that are set by the consortium of V-ALERT for the selection of the most appropriate virtual world platform are outlined and the final choice is discussed. The platform of choice is described in more details concerning its functionality and features, as well as its possible integration with other modules such as Learning Management Systems (LMSs), for example LMS Moodle.
