Sažetak
During phytosociological research in the Neretva River Delta in July 2016, we have noted an abundant presence of species Myriophyllum heterophyllum Michx. (Haloragaceae) within vegetation of rooted leaf-floating macrophytes of the Nymphaeion alabae Oberd. 1957 alliance (the order Potamogetonetalia Koch 1926). The species is native to the North America. In Europe, It is present in nine countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and Northern Ireland. According to the data of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO), Myriophyllum heterophyllum has the status of invasive species in the freshwater ecosystems since 2012. The species is used for ornamental purposes in aquariums and ponds. Reproduction occurs primarily through vegetative fragmentation and rhizome division, as well as by seeds remaining in the sediments. Myriophyllum heterophyllum’s habitats are freshwater ponds, lakes, ditches and all other standing and slow flowing waters. It can grow in waters up to depth of 1.8 m. Although its areal is still limited in Europe, it is considered an invasive species with a tendency of rapid expansion. According to recent knowledge, finding of this species in the lower Neretva River is also the first finding in Southeast Europe.
