Sažetak
An analysis of the patients with urinary tract infections treated as out-patients at University Hospital for Infectious Diseases, Department of urinary infections, was carried out. During the 12-month period (January-December 1987) 1780 patients were examined and consequently 15 654 examinations were performed. Close to one half of the patients were females in the age group 20-40 years. Majority of the patients suffered from acute cystitis and according to the clinical syndrome categories 3/4 of the patients were treated for acute noncomplicated recurrent urinary infection. Female patients with recurrent infections were regularly submitted to gynaecologic examination: in 70% of these patients vaginal swabs and periurethral swabs revealed the same etiological agent as the one isolated from the urine specimen. Most frequently isolated bacterial agents were: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and beta-haemolytic streptococci group D and B. Antimicrobial treatment was carried out as well as the local instillation of antimicrobial agents. The best results were obtained if both partners were simultaneously treated. In case when that was not acceptable long-term low-dose prophylaxis was necessary.
